Coughing is the body’s way of expelling an irritant in the throat and airways, and can be caused by many factors, including allergies, asthma, pneumonia, flu, colds and postnasal drip.
While coughing is a normal occurrence, if it persists longer than a week you should be evaluated by a medical provider to determine the underlying cause and receive proper treatment.
Some people, however, uses onions as a home remedy for a cough.
Onion Cough Syrup
Ayurvedic medicine has been using an onion poultice for the chest or feet to cure coughs, fevers and flus for centuries. They also use the onion poultice to reduce pain and inflammation in the joints.
It is said that white onions work better than red onions. Yellow onions would be an acceptable alternative, but white onions, work best.
You need:
– 1 onion
– granulated sugar
– a container with a lid, which fits the onion
Preparation:
1. Peel and slice the onion
2. Layer sugar and onion slices in the jar. Top with more sugar. Make sure to close the jar tightly.
3. Let it sit overnight (6-8 hours). Pretty soon you’ll see liquid in the jar.
Dosage:
Take a spoonful of this mixture as needed for coughs & colds. Store the extra syrup in the fridge for one day. Make fresh syrup every 1-2 days.
How would onions help a cough or cold?
Onions are well known for strengthening the immune system, as well as being brilliant natural antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and expectorants.
It is more suitable for children, the elderly, people who need a gentler remedy or for anyone who isn’t crazy about medication.
